Hi there... is your Japanese as good as your English?
Do you have a background working with children between the ages of either 5 and 7, or 10 and 12, and a track record of moving them forward in their learning? If so, then we'd love to chat with you to see if you'd be a good fit for our school.
Our younger students tend to have classes between 4pm and 6pm, so if you're available Monday through Friday this may be a good opportunity for you to pick up between four and six classes.
The challenge in teaching children in these age groups is threefold, so you should have an acute understand of these obstacles.
First, their English either non-existent or rudimentary, so to effectively reach and teach, you'll need Japanese, and the ability to explain grammar in Japanese.
Second, they're kids, so they're often distracted in the moment, or because of what preceded or follows their class (read: clubs!) ;-) Are you a good manager of young personalities? Great, that'll help more than almost anything.
Third, they forget most of what they learn (because they only come once a week) unless you've got them on a track that gets them away from flashcards and into a systematic approach. If you're a planner and using specific tools to reach kids and propel them forward in their learning, you're nearly a perfect fit. So, please reach out if this sounds like you. ;-)
As far as work life goes, we aim to provide a work experience that creates happy teachers and happy students. So, if whether you're a mom or dad with only a few hours to spare a week, or a pro looking to pack up your schedule, you can find a home here.
One thing we do differently than many schools is we leave the transport costs to you. Why? Because we've decided to pay a higher hourly wage to compensate for this, and because we've found that encouraging teachers to think like business people (who cover certain expenses on their own) tends to translate into a much better working experience for everyone involved. For that reason, most of our teachers live within 15 to 20 minutes of Itayado station. The aim of this is to get you in and out of class with time for YOURSELF. That's important! ;-) These classes are only during the week, so no weekend work - also part of our overall work / life balance approach.
A few things you'll need to be considered for this post:
1. The ability to work in Japan through at least 2020.
2. A lesson plan mentality: please share one to three books you routinely use with students in this age-bracket.
3. Japanese and English fluency. Please share your JLPT test level, if you're not a native Japanese speaker.
